About the outside seminar/ lecture/ event.
This isn’t an “event”, per se, but an approved research activity that I am happy to have you count as one of your outside “events”.
The Tacoma Public Library has some phenomenal local history research tools available on their website that would allow you to delve into the history of one or more campus buildings. If you are interested in pursuing this option, here is what I would recommend:
1. Begin by viewing the signage on the outside of a campus building, which will give you the basics of when it was built, what it’s original name was, and some brief history of the structure.?
2. Visit the?Tacoma Public Library’s website?(Links to an external site.), and navigate to either the?Image Archives?(Links to an external site.)?or the?Buildings Index?(Links to an external site.)?(or both!), and try searching for the name of the building in question. Some of the primary things you will find will be historic photographs and information about historic newspaper articles.? For the images, you can view these online without having to visit the library. For the newspaper articles, if you’re interested? in seeing those, you’d need to visit the physical library.
3. For your paper, focus on something you found interesting about the history of the building, citing as your source the local history artifact(s) that help you tell that story – newspaper clippings, historic photographs, etc.

Prairie Line Trail Completion Celebration

Please join Mayor Victoria Woodards and other community leaders for a reception and light refreshments at the Tacoma Art Museum.The Prairie Line Trail project converted one mile of the historic Prairie Line railroad corridor, through downtown Tacoma, into a signature public space integrating a multi-use trail, historic/cultural interpretation, public art, multimedia, and green features. This project area lies within the Union Station Conservation District and Union Depot/Warehouse Historic District, the Brewery District, and the Tacoma waterfront.

Their current exhibit,?Old School Tacoma?(Links to an external site.), doesn’t specifically address UWT history, but is relevant enough in topic that I am happy to have you attend this exhibit as an outside event in this class.
