OPTION #1: AIDING IN THE PRESERVATION OF A SPECIES
Everyday human actions have an impact on species in other nations, making conservation a multidisciplinary subject. It is critical to comprehend how our actions effect the environment in order to aid in the resolution of these issues. You will
select one species for this Portfolio option that you want to ensure will be around for many generations. Any plant or animal that can be discovered in the wild can be used (i.e., no humans, domestic cats, or domestic dogs). You’ll write a paper
about the threats facing your selected species and how we can help them overcome them. You’ll also make a presentation to help spread the news about the problems your species is experiencing and to ask people to help. The following
elements will be addressed in your paper:
Describe your species, including where it lives, what it eats, who eats it, and how it interacts with people.
Discuss your species’ IUCN Red List status (is it endangered?) and the challenges to its survival. One of your references for this section should be the IUCN Red List (Links to an external site.).
Describe the challenges that your species faces, as well as how these threats influence other species. Is one of the risks persons or organizations?
Discuss potential solutions to the threats that your species faces. What remedies have individuals on the ground proposed? Based on what you know, what solutions can you come up with?
Make touch with one person who is familiar with the species. This could be a university researcher or a non-profit researcher striving to safeguard the species. Ask the individual in your interview (through email, phone, or in person) about the
challenges the species confronts, why it is vital to conserve the species, and what steps he or she would propose to those interested in helping with the conservation effort. In an appendix page at the end of your report, include a transcript or summary paragraph from your interview.
Choose two strategies to assist in the conservation of your species. These might be ideas offered by the researcher, or they could be new ways you devised on your own. Try them out for part or all of the last three weeks of the course, and
keep track of the results to show how your adjustments impacted the course. Contribute to a conservation group that is trying to safeguard the species (ideally, volunteer to do something, instead of just sending money). Launch a social media
campaign to raise awareness about the plight of your species. If the species is native to your area, try to educate your neighbors about it. Make a lifestyle adjustment that will benefit the speciesjust make sure it isn’t one of the five actions
you’ve already taken to reduce your carbon footprint. What other options do you have? Whatever steps you take, you’ll need to find out a mechanism to determine whether or not they were successful.
Discuss why you picked the method of assistance you did, as well as how it went.
To demonstrate the impact of your modification, present the data you obtained before and after the change.
Is this something you’d like to keep doing? What would be the environmental impact if you continued to make this change?
Requirements:
The length of your written paper should be 6-8 pages, not including the title and reference pages, which are required.
Outside of the textbook, you must mention at least three sources for this task. Academic journals must be one of these sources. The CSU Global Library (Links to an external site.) is an excellent source of information.
Your paper must follow the CSU Global Writing Center’s formatting guidelines (Links to an external site.).

OPTION #2: AIDING IN THE PRESERVATION OF A NATURAL AREA
Everyday human actions have an impact on environments all across the world, making conservation an interdisciplinary issue. It is critical to comprehend how our actions effect the environment in order to aid in the resolution of these issues.
You will select a local natural area for this Portfolio choice that you want to ensure will be around for many generations. It could be a national park, a state park, a county park, or other protected area (e.g., Nature Conservancy site). You’ll write
a report describing the hazards to your natural area and how we can assist mitigate them, as well as describe two particular measures you’ve made. You’ll also put together a presentation to share your project with the rest of the class. The following elements will be addressed in your paper:
Describe the creatures that reside in your natural environment, the climate, the geography, and the role of humans in your natural area.
Discuss the threats that your natural region is facing. Is climate change producing issues in that area? Is habitat destruction a problem? Is there a problem with pollution? What else is going on in your neighborhood?
Describe how the dangers that your area faces have an impact on other natural areas. Are the threats limited to the immediate area, or do they affect other areas as well?
Discuss potential solutions to the threats that your natural region faces. What additional options have been proposed? Based on what you know, what solutions can you come up with?
Make touch with one person who is familiar with the natural environment. Someone from the group in charge of the site would be your best bet. If it’s a state park, for example, ask to speak with the park naturalist or perhaps the park manager. Ask the individual in your interview (by email, phone, or in person) about the threats to the natural region, why it is vital to maintain the natural area, and what measures he or she would recommend to those willing to help with the conservation
effort. In an appendix page at the end of your report, include a transcript or summary paragraph from your interview.
Choose two alternative ways you can contribute to the preservation of your natural region. These might be suggestions made during your previous step’s interview, or ideas you came up with on your own. Any actions at the natural area that
require interventions other than litter pick-up must first be permitted by the agency in charge of the site. During the remaining three weeks of the course, try out the two options for part or all of the time, and keep track of the statistics to see if your actions had an influence. Collect garbage in that area. Volunteer to help weed out invasive species in the natural area, or lead community walks to promote awareness of the threats it confronts. You may also think about making lifestyle
adjustments that will benefit the park; just make sure that whatever you do does not duplicate one of the five activities you did for the footprint-reduction project. What other options do you have? Whatever steps you take, you’ll need to find out
a mechanism to determine whether or not they were successful.
Discuss why you picked the method of assistance you did, as well as how it went.
To demonstrate the impact of your modification, present the data you obtained before and after the change.
