Identifying the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a nurse leader
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and accrediting bodies collaborated in 2004 to set universal standards for advanced practice education, accreditation, licensure, and certification. The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, and Education divided APRNs into four distinct roles: certified nurse practitioners (CNPs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), and certified nurse midwives (CNMs), as well as at least one of six population foci: family/individual across the lifespan, adult-gerontology, and pediatric-gerontology (Consensus Model). The nurse leader and nurse educator, however, are not among the four roles mentioned. Some experts consider the positions of nurse leader and nurse educator to be advanced practice nursing roles, while others disagree.
Examine the benefits and drawbacks of recognizing the roles of nurse leader and nurse educator in advanced practice nursing.
