Instructions for Organizational Proposal
This assignment is MANDATORY. If you do not complete this assignment, you will receive a grade of F for the semester, regardless of your class average. Make every plan and determination to complete this assignment.
Purpose: This assignment will be a culmination of many of the concepts and skills discussed in this course. This assignment will involve research, planning, problem-solving, and an oral presentation utilizing presentation software.
Description: In the business world, you will be required to make proposals for new initiatives, changes to your organizations structure or practices, or to request resources that you need to be successful. It is not enough to just inform, or tell your organization what you need or what you want to happen, you must effectively prepare a proposal and persuade your audience to act on what you present. This requires that the speaker conduct good research, prepare a logical and persuasive argument, and create a presentation that is visually striking to keep your audience’ attention and to motivate them to action. The student will first identify a problem or need in the community or in an organization they are associated with. Then the student will research the problem or need before choosing a solution to propose. The student will then create an oral presentation in which they will effectively persuade their audience that a need or problem exists and that their proposed solution should be adopted.
Requirements:
- General Goal: To Persuade
- 4-7 Minutes in length
- Speech must be delivered using an extemporaneous style with a formal outline submitted for grading and used as the primary notes.
- Speech must be delivered in front of live audience either in class or with an audience of no less than 5 people for full credit. If you only have 4 people in the audience, there will be 5 points deducted. If you only have 3 people present, there will be 15 points deducted. If you have less than 3 people, no credit will be awarded for the submission. This will result in automatic failure for the assignment and the course. Online students may request to deliver the speech in person on campus in one of the seated classes. Email me for information regarding class times.
- Minimum of 2 outside sources cited during the presentation. At least one piece of data or supporting material must be created by the speaker. (Examples include original research, surveys, interviews, independent data collection.)
- Presentation software utilized during the presentation. Examples include PowerPoint or Prezi.
- Must identify a specific problem and a specific plan of action.
- Demonstrate elements of effective physical delivery.
Seated Sections:
- Make sure that you have signed up for a day to present before speeches are scheduled to begin in class.
- Have your visual aid saved to a flash drive or online storage so that you can access it the day of the speech. I recommend a back-up, such as by emailing yourself and attaching your visual aid to the email just in case there is an issue with your flash-drive on the day of presentation. Any technical issues are the responsibility of the student, not the instructor.
- You should practice and test electronic materials and tools (laptop, projector, remote) before the day of the speech. You may stay after class to test and become familiar with equipment or schedule a time with the instructor to come in outside of class and rehearse with equipment. This is optional, not required, but you will be responsible for managing any technical issues on your own the day of your speech.
- Make sure that before the day of your speech that you have submitted your speech outline through BlackBoard so that I can view your outline on BlackBoard while you are presenting in class. The link for the final assignment submission will be in Module G.
Online Students:
- Speech must be recorded in front of a live audience. Minimum of 3 people for credit, minimum of 5 people for FULL CREDIT. Make arrangements now to have a full audience before the day of the speech. Audience must be partially visible on camera, even if only the backs of their heads. Camera should focus on speaker. Speaker should address the audience, not the camera. I must be able to see speaker clearly to critique posture, gestures, and facial expressions. I must be able to hear the speaker clearly enough to critique volume, pausing, fluency, articulation, pronunciation, and vocal variety.
- After recording the speech, upload the speech to YouTube and set to UNLISTED. Do not set the video to Private or Public.
- Go to your video, and when you see it playing, copy the URL address and paste it to the top of your outline. Submit your outline with the working URL address as your submission. The link for the final assignment submission will be in Module G.
- You may submit your PowerPoint presentation along with your PowerPoint. If you are using a Prezi presentation, you can submit the URL address. It is most important that your audience can see your presentation. Whatever the size audience, make sure that the screen you use is large enough for the audience to see. Usually, a laptop or a tablet can be connected to an HDTV using an HDMI cable. Find an HDMI cable that is compatible with your laptop, computer, or tablet and connect to an HDTV if you do not have access to a room with a projector or screen.
