Jiangmen Social Welfare Institution Case Essay
I am the only child in my family. I was born in a happy family in a city. To some extent, my parents dote on me in many ways. Even though I cannot get everything I want in the world, my parents will try their best to give me what I need in my life.
I seldom took active parts in doing volunteer work before I did the service learning because I thought there should be many volunteers in the society. I did not think it necessary to do it.
But when I did my service learning in Jiangmen Social Welfare Institution, I knew I was wrong. Children who live in Jiangmen Social Welfare Institution are mostly abandoned by their parents. Some had disabilities in their body. They could not take care of themselves. Some had weak intelligence.
They could not talk normally to people even if they were already a big kid. Their disabilities may be congenital so that their parents gave them up when they were born. But some of them became disabled because of illness or accident, and they were born in a small country. Their parents had no money to treat them well.
The others were girls. For the girls, most of them were healthy. The reason they lived here was their gender. Most people who lived in the rural areas wanted to have boys because they thought boys could carry on the family line. In fact, most of the girls in the institution were clever, sensible and dependent. I did not know how these girls thought.
As a girl, I could not image if they could not get love from their parents. They should wear beautiful clothes at their age. But they only had a few clothes; most are school uniforms. When I looked back to my childhood, my parents bought lots of beautiful clothes for me. Compared with them, I felt I am happy enough.
I was not independent, and when I used to do things that were difficult, I relied on my parents. When facing some problems in my life, I could not handle it confidently and had to ask my parents for help. And if I could not get help, I would be upset and angry. Finally, I would stop moving on and give up solving the problem.
But when I saw the children there lived their lives dependently, I felt ashamed. I should learn from these children. For instance, when I played with the children on the playground, there was a little girl who had disability with one of her legs so that she could not run fast. But in order to catch up with others, she kept walking fast even though she fell down again and again. She did not say yes to her fate but continued going on.
We could not deny that the children need taking good care of, but they have the spirit of living on bravely. They also had problems in their lives, but they did not give up on themselves. On the contrary, they lived in an optimistic way.
Their spirit encouraged me to bravely face the difficulties in my life. I did not have to be afraid about the difficulties because the more I was afraid, the more I would retreat. Through this project, I improved my life skills and thought more about my life. I knew what I should do in the future and how to do it better.
United Action for Youth
United Action for Youth (UAY) was a special institution for the youth. It had counselors and Mediators for children, adolescents and parents. What’s more, it provided art courses for the youth.
In the United States, some youths were living in a single-parent family because their parents divorced or their mother bore them too young. “UAY provides adults who really understand young people and who know how to reach the ones who need someone to trust. UAY can help bring broken families together, and to help a young “too soon” mother give her baby the best start possible” (Weingeist 2012).
What Wingiest said inspired me to think deeply. Everyone has a childhood, and everyone wanted to have an unforgettable memory on the way of growth. As a volunteer in UAY, I thought we could realize our value to help the youth to let their dream come true.
Take our art works for example. Even though what we did was simple and not professional, we made them had a good environment to celebrate their Halloween. In the process of making the art works, we made some mistakes, so that we have to do it again and again. But none of us said it was too hard and would like to go home.
We prepared the works using our heart. We not only provided our service to do the art works, but also gave them love and warmth. They might feel even if they lived in a broken family, they did not lack love because the staff of UAY and we volunteers would support them forever. And their life was not black and white, but colorful. This would be the outcome we wanted, and if it was realized, our serving value would take action.
I finished all the sections of my service learning on December last year. It was short, but all these three projects taught me a lot in my life. They changed my mind of being a volunteer.Service learning, literally, means “serving and learning,” which is basically improving us by helping others. Since service is a peer-to-peer platform, it should be two ways. Providing service is not only helping others. We have gotten into others’ lives, and the people we served also left their smiles and happiness in our hearts.
We can get satisfaction from the reflection of the people we serve. Therefore, providing service is a win-win strategy to help people and know more people in the society.
From the experiences of Service Learning, I felt that helping others cannot only give the favor to the person who needed it, but also can help myself to improve my life-skills like communicating, and problem-solving.Also, I learned a lot of things which I cannot learn from the textbooks and classes, such as valuing and effectiveness in the social interaction. How to treat different people was an abstruse lesson.
The way we had to learn was long, and it will last until forever. After I did service learning, I realized that no matter what position I am, as long as I want to contribute your help, I will help society.
I will not stop providing service to society, even though my power is not huge. It is just a temporary pause while my service-learning course is finished. There are still many things waiting for me to learn. It is also a new beginning for me to serve and learn, forever.
