John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Assignment Term Paper
John F. Kennedy, the youngest man to ever be elected president, was advised not to try to grapple with Civil Rights as it was seen as an issue not tangibly solvable which could only alienate Southern Democrats.
But after seeing the violence surrounding black students being denied physical admittance to the University of Mississippi and the University of Alabama, the president was so incensed he told his advisors he would not wait one more day to speak out and on June 11, 1963, he demanded television airtime to address the nation and, very quickly was speaking to a national audience without actually having finished writing the speech he was delivering.
The link below the picture of John Kennedy with civil rights leaders (including Martin Luther King and John Lewis) will take you to some excerpts from that speech. A little over five months later JFK was cut down by an assassin’s bullet in Dallas, Texas, leaving it to his vice-president, Lyndon Johnson, to carry out the work of passing civil rights legislation.
In 1968 his younger brother, and his Attorney General when he was president, Bobby Kennedy, was himself campaigning for the Democratic nomination for President when, after arriving in Indianapolis, Indiana, to deliver a campaign speech, was told Martin Luther King had been assassinated. As he was about to address a largely black, urban audience, he was advised to cancel the speech. Instead, he insisted on delivering the news to a crowd unaware of the events. The footage of that powerful five-minute speech is also below.
In this discussion, provide at least two of what you consider to be the most powerful and/or effective quotes from each speech, three adjectives (descriptive words) that you believe captures the tone or sentiment of each speech, and a sentence or two of your personal impressions of the Kennedy brothers based on these two speeches. Then comment on at least two other classmates’ remarks. Post your remarks as soon as possible to allow time to respond to other’s comments.

student 1JFK speech
“It ought to be possible, in short, for every American to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color. In short, every American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish his children to be treated. But this is not the case….
“One hundred years of delay have passed since President Lincoln freed the slaves, yet their heirs, their grandsons, are not fully free….”
RFK speech
“Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to understand and to comprehend and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that is spread across our land with an effort to understand compassion and love.”
“What we need in the United States is not division, … hatred, … violence, and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom and compassion towards one another.”
Adjectives – powerful, calm, concerned
Based off these two speeches, the Kennedy brothers were really striving for change within the system. Very bright, wanting every single person to feel loved and treated equal.

JFK Speech
1) “The heart of the question is — whether all Americans are to be afforded equal rights and equal opportunities.”
2) “It ought to be possible, in short, for every American to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color.”
Adjectives: Stern, Demanding, Assertive
According to this speech it seems as if John F. Kennedy’s ideals were closely related to those of Martin Luther King. Also, the message that he left before he was assassinated really paved the way on how civil rights legislation was going to be passed.
RFK Speech
1) “What kind of nation we are, and what direction do we want to move in?”
2) ” what we need in the United States is love, wisdom, and compassion toward one another.”
Adjectives: Sorrow, Powerful, Expressive
Robert Kennedy expressed in his speech how deeply he felt about the loss of his brother JFK as well Martin Luther King. He seems to want to continue their legacy not for vengeance, but for the good of the nation. Both the Kennedy brothers seem to have a natural feel for civil rights, but inevitably that is what causes their demise.
