Re: Topic 3 DQ 1
Leaders who use authoritarian styles are usually the ones who make the decisions in their team. They lead others, assign tasks, and are the ones in control. A leader with a democratic style uses democratic decision making. This means that they listen to the desires of their followers and use that input to make the final decision. These leaders tend to make their followers feel validated. Finally, a laissez-faire leadership style mostly monitors. They are not as involved in the decision-making process as the other styles but they are still aware of what is going on and is offering constant feedback. All of these leadership styles have pros and cons to them. Being able to adjust your leadership style to your followers and environment is crucial to succeed. According to the article 8 Common Leadership Styles (2018) , there is a time to use each leadership trait and each trait has an impact on its followers. Some of the traits that stood out to me that I believe might be difficult for public servants to follow were charisma, laissez-faire, and authoritarian. While charisma is a great trait, it might be difficult to apply it when you have to enforce policies that may not make the community happy. Laissez-faire and authoritarian can be challenging if followers need direct guidance or compassion.

Topic 3 DQ 1
The author of our textbook explains in detail three common leadership styles. These are authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire. An authoritarian leader is someone who “exhibits higher amounts of influence” (Northouse,2019). A leader who is more democratic is a leader who “shows a moderate amount of influence” (Northouse, 2019) and a leader who “exhibits little to no influence is laissez-faire”(Northouse, 2019). When going further in his explanation the author states that a leader who likes structure, likes to lay the ground rules for others, enjoys supervising others while they work and who believes it is up to you to make sure followers do their work are considered to fall under the authoritarian leadership style. This is also someone who wants to be in charge or wants to know that others are doing and believes in rewards and punishments are authoritarian (Northouse, 2019). A leader who is democratic is one who sometimes gives orders but works with those under the leader to accomplish a task (Northouse, 2019). Also, a democratic leader helps their employees reach their own personal goals (Northouse, 2019). The third leader, laissez-faire is one who likes to keep a low profile, often leaving employees to accomplish whatever they can on their own (Northouse, 2019). It is someone who believes that the followers will thrive on freedom, but this leadership style hinders success and productivity (Northouse, 2019).
Moving onward to three of the ten characteristics referenced by Northouse (2019) that are most difficult for public leaders to learn would be healing, commitment of growth of people, and building community (Northouse, 2019). To begin, all three are individualistic. Healing is an individual process that is very different for each person. To have a leader come in and say “I can do this or that to heal you” is not only dangerous but impossible because as the leader, one is not there through the tough times. For example, take when a natural disaster happens, it is easy to “be there” as it happens but what about after, when the effects linger? Second, commitment to growth of people. This is another that is not only dangerous but somewhat impossible because like the other two it is a process that is individualistic. People grow at different times in their lives as well as through different circumstances. You cannot dictate how or when someone can grow. The leader does not know in what way the person needs to grow. Apart from being able to provide resources and assistance from a distance, you never know how that person will use, or misuse, those resources. An example of this is the SNAP/TANF program. In my opinion, it is a wonderful SHORT -TERM aid that should only be used when in actual need. It being a line item in someone’s budget as if it were income is not only a hinderance on growth but a hinderance in the prosperity of the community. Third and final, building community. This one is hard for leaders to learn because just like the others, it is a process that affects people differently and at different times. We as a nation have a “on my own” mentality. Therefore, socialism will never work here because we work hard for what we have and do not care to share our earnings, apart from charitable giving. Further, a leader cannot learn this, it must come from others. He or she as the leader can incentivize others but it is something that must come from the community.

Autocratic leadership is defined by expression of clear Expectations by leaders for the goals to be achieved along with instructions on how and when it needs to be achieved. The style of leadership clearly focuses on command and control with clear demarcation between the leader and the follower an independent decision making with minimum involvement of and inputs from, the rest of the group. There is little or no delegation of authority with excessive control discouraging creativity and innovation as there is little scope for initiative with minimum delegation and no autonomy being provided. Authoritarian leadership can be an advantage in critical situation requiring immediate decision making with minimal scope for group analysis of the situation and Rapid decision with decisive action are required with application of experience and knowledge of the leader. Delegative leadership style the most delegation of authority with responsibility and accountability with minimal definition of Expectations or support and guidance for achievement of the desired goals.
