Middle East in The New Year 2030 Paper
The word “op-ed” stands for the phrase “opposite the editorial page.” That’s where newspapers frequently put them. It is a short opinion piece, most commonly about the news of the day but occasionally about the joys of Spring, the true meaning of Christmas, why everyone needs a dog, and the like. Here are three sample op-eds I have written:
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11590484
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/11/opinion/assad-has-won-in-syria-but-syria-hardly-exists.html
So, now it’s your turn.
In a 600 word (about a paragraph over two pages) me an op-ed about what, you believe the Middle East will look like in the year 2030. You can take on any aspect, or several aspects, including (but not limited to):
Human security in the region
The possible effects of covid
Regional rivalries
The role of great powers like the United States, Russia, and China
Authoritarian governance
Popular resistance to authoritarian governance
The Israel-Palestine conflict
The Iran nuclear deal
The future of oil
Climate change
Refugees and IDPs
The end/resilience of pro-democracy movements in the Arab Middle East
How Joe Biden’s Middle East policy will affect the region
The effects of Donald Trump’s Middle East policy
What civil wars in Syria, Yemen, and Libya will turn out
The future of Lebanon
Anything else that floats your boat
Just have fun with it: It’s your opinion (although it should be an informed opinion).
