First: Hello everyone!
In prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace, it goes over the work-related MSDs that can affect the muscles, nerves and tendons. Workers in various industries and occupations can be exposed to risk factor at work, such lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the same or similar task repetitively.
When I use to go to UK I was a lab technician in a poultry research lab. As a lab technician, it was common to perform the same or similar task repetitively daily. One of the jobs I had to do bi weekly for eggs was to weight, and do a strength test (used a machine to test how much force it would take to break an egg). I would have to weight and break 720 eggs (360 white and 360 brown). This task uses MSD from turning my body to the left to pick up an egg, to moving the egg to a scale, using the breaking machine to break the egg cart, and also to checking excel spreadsheet to make sure my egg’s data was recording. The best way to describe the movement I was moving I an arm’s length of a U shape. My eggs was on the left of me the scale and breaking machine was in front of me and my computer was to the right. After repeating this task 720 times in 2 half hours. I would get sore sometimes, so I started to do yoga before and after I would go work.
Second:
I chose musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) because I suffered from one for 12 years. In the industrial food sanitation industry, lower back injuries, sore knees, carpal tunnel and trigger finger are very common issues. They probably account for at least 30% of the injuries in the industrial sanitation industry (I cannot state company specifics when it comes to injuries). At any one time depending on the size of the facility, our employees can easily move between 1,000 lbs – 20,000 lbs of waste in a single 8-hour shift, using shovels to remove scraps from the floor, moving equipment, etc. How can we reduce the number of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace? There are several options, and my company has started a stretch and flex program, where every night before we start to work the entire team gets together and does some basic stretches of critical areas. We have also begun replacing tools with new, more ergonomically designed tools. We have also spent more time teaching proper lifting techniques. I would say that bad lifting techniques are the #1 issues for a majority of lower back injuries; a close second would be reaching and stretching overhead or extending too far.
