(You may write on one or both of the questions.) Have you noticed a shift in storylines or media consumption?)
Grading
The ability to rapidly and clearly communicate answers to intelligence inquiries in one page or less of substance is what we’re working on here. Format:
Title
BLUF
*In-text citations using Zotero as evidence (citation management)
Conclusion
Bibliographical information (may go on to second page)
single line spacing
Here are some broad guidelines for your report:
Make sure your paper starts with a BLUF (bottom line up front). Simply answer the question and explain why it’s significant in a sentence or two. It is frequently preferable to conduct research and locate reference before composing a BLUF.
The body of the paper should only provide evidence that supports the BLUF. You don’t have the real estate for historical background in a report this brief, hence these are short reports. If you absolutely must provide context, do so in one or two phrases. Extraneous material weakens your argument and makes it difficult to follow your judgement. Imagine briefing a senior policymaker on the question they asked you in three minutes or less. What must you include in order to convey your point?
Make your grammar and structure as simple as possible. The style of intelligence writing is straightforward and straightforward. We frequently discuss our findings with foreign intelligence agencies or non-native English speakers. In your writing, avoid run-on phrases, passive voice, and tense mixing. Use the simple past tense to describe events that happened in the past. It’s difficult to understand conditional present continuous (for example, “ISIS would be gathering support for the next four years”). Please make the event sequence as obvious as possible, even if your grammar is technically perfect.
Your conclusion should follow logically from the evidence you’ve presented. In the end, do not introduce completely new notions. Maintain a strong grip. Explain why the evidence you presented is important, intriguing, concerning, or predictive in some way. This is your data evaluation. What value do you provide to the reporting as an analyst? It doesn’t have to be life-changing. Perhaps you’re emphasizing the fact that there are several grievances rather than a single source of dissatisfaction. Perhaps you’ve demonstrated how the grievances have changed over time. Perhaps the objectives have shifted. This evaluation should be mentioned in your BLUF (briefly!). This is another reason why composing the BLUF at the end of your writing process is often preferable.
