(between 200 and 250 words)
Casablanca and World War II are discussed.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Office of War Information (OWI) in July 1942 with the goal of informing the general public about the war effort and bolstering American support for the common Allied cause through print, radio, and film. The Bureau of Motion Pictures (BMP) collaborated directly with the film industry on the representation of patriotism, tolerance, duty, and sacrifice in film as part of the OWI. All studio executives, directors, writers, and producers received a copy of the BMP’s film script handbook. It outlined a vision and set of guidelines for the entertainment industry’s contribution to the war effort. The BMP also looked at Hollywood films to see if they conveyed the right message, which was usually one of patriotism and sacrifice. While the OWI did not have the authority to outright ban films, it could obstruct international distribution and reduce Hollywood profits if studios refused to cooperate with their goals. The OWI ceased operations in 1945, at the end of the war. (http://marb.kennesaw.edu/hollywoodandwar/exhibits/show/hollywoodgoestowar/censorship/owiandbmp.html) (This is a link to an external site.)
The highlights of the OWI review of Casablanca, as seen in the lecture, are as follows:
1. The film paints a vivid picture of the Underground movement’s spirit.
2. The chaos and misery that fascism brings are graphically depicted.
3. It demonstrates how personal desires must be put aside in order to defeat fascism.
4. It is revealed that many French people are not fully cooperating with the Nazis.
5. America is portrayed as a haven for oppressed and homeless people.
6. The Nazis are well-represented in the film. (This does not imply that the Nazis are good people.) It means the film does a good job of portraying the Nazis’ true evil nature.)
* Choose two of these and provide examples of how the film achieves these points with specific detail (description of visual and/or quote from dialogue) from the film. If you can’t recall an exact quote, which I doubt, an approximate paraphrase will suffice. Three to four time stamps are required.
