Showcase Critical Thinking Skills
Write a review of 850-1,200 words. Follow the principles in Chapter 15 to write an effective review. Study the “Characteristic Features” on pp. 302-313.
Audience: Your audience for this assignment is the entire ACC community – students, staff, faculty, and other people associated with or interested in the topic. Imagine that your review may be published in a campus magazine at the end of the semester.
Sources: You must use at least two sources, and you must accurately give credit for the information you use from those sources. Review Chapters 21, 22, 23 and 27 as needed.
Format: Prepare your essay in MLA style, which is covered in Chapter 27.
Topics
Books, movies, restaurants, video games, local events, area attractions, and various consumer products can all be the subjects of reviews. Whatever subject you review, you will be judging it – deciding if it is good or bad, worthwhile or not worthwhile.
Showcase Critical Thinking Skills
Specific Instructions: Students will choose their own review topics. Because of the short time allowed in this MINI semester, topics do not have to be approved. Whatever you choose – movie, book, game, event, product, etc. – it should be of interest and relevance to your audience. It should also be timely. For example, if you’re reviewing a classic movie rather than a current one, it should be obvious why you are reviewing this movie at this particular point in time (e.g. anniversary of its release, sequel is about to come out, etc.). Also note that a review requires you to begin from (or at least pretend to begin from) a neutral, objective position. It’s probably a bad idea to review your favorite book, a movie you hate, or anything else about which you feel very strongly.

Reminder: Your evaluation of your paper is based on your being able to select a topic and make it narrow enough so that you can provide adequate support. In other words, don’t just skim over a topic. And do not summarize a movie or a book or restate the product specifications.
Critical Thinking
This essay must showcase critical thinking skills by including these elements:
Inquiry: Avoid jumping to conclusions. You should examine and question assumptions about why the subject is good or bad, why it is worthwhile or not worthwhile. You should critically examine your own opinions to make sure they are supportable by the evidence you gather.
Support: Develop a list of criteria that are appropriate for judging your subject. (See pages 237-38.) Use those criteria to support and explain the insights you share in your essay. Always refer to specific details and facts to show how the subject meets or fails to meet the criteria.
Synthesis: You must put your conclusions in context with the opinions and insights of other people. This is called synthesis, and it is covered in Chapter 21. You will need to consult outside sources. Your instructor will provide guidelines for appropriate and useful sources.
Conclusion: The judgment you express about your topic must be based on specific evidence and must be objectively supportable
