Spreadsheet for the Columbia Southern University Decision Support System
You are the IT Department Manager of a fictional Fixed Base Operator (FBO) in Somewhere, Kansas, in this practical exercise. You’ve been given the responsibility of creating a simple spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel that will serve as the main component of a Decision Support System (DSS).
The company Finance Department Manager will use the DSS spreadsheet to make systematic judgments about aviation fuel purchasing contracts. To make those judgments, the manager will need data that indicates prices for two separate types of aviation fuel, Jet Fuel and AVgas, from the five various vendors with whom the organization has accounts. The DSS should show the lowest prices in US dollars for each of the two types of aviation fuel, as well as the vendors who provide those prices.
The dashboard criteria are as follows:
In a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, submit the DSS.
Two “MIN” and two “IF” functions should be submitted.
Cells should be formatted with TWO decimal places.
Follow the instructions below to format the spreadsheet.
Make a header row in Row 1 with the following labels in bold font:
Vendor Name (Column A)
Jet Fuel Price (Column B)
Avgas Price (Column C)
List the following vendors in non-bold typeface in Column A, Rows 2 through 6:
Fuel for the Yellow Plains
Fuel for Okie Stokie
The Best Fuel Ever
Fuel from Smith Bros.
Fuel for the Wild West
Enter fictitious pricing figures for all vendors and both types of gasoline in Columns B and C, Rows 2 through 6, preserving the range of values between $5.00 and $10.00 for each type of fuel. Each type of fuel must have its own numerical values. Columns B and C, Rows 2 through 6, format the cells as Currency with TWO decimal places.
In strong type, write Best Jet Fuel Price in the cell in Column A, Row 8.
In Column A, Row 9, bold the cell labeled “Jet Fuel Vendor.”
In Column A, Row 11, bold the cell labeled “Best Avgas Price.”
Boldly write “Avgas Vendor” in the cell in Column A, Row 12.
Using Formulas and Functions
Create a formula for the cell in Column B, Row 8 that calculates the lowest number for the Jet Fuel pricing available from the five providers using the MIN function.
Create a formula for the cell in Column C, Row 11 that generates the lowest number for the Avgas pricing available from the five providers using the MIN function.
Create a formula for the cell in Column B, Row 9 that places the name of the vendor selected to have the Best Jet Fuel Price using nested IF functions.
For the data in the cell in Column B, Row 9, choose Align Right.
Create a formula for the field in Column C, Row 12 that places the name of the vendor selected to have the Best Avgas Price using nested IF functions.
For the data in the cell at Column C, Row 12, choose Align Right.
For the cells in Columns A, B, and C, Rows 1 through 12, choose All Borders.
