Structural Racism Case Study Essay Project
discussion
structural oppression provides a framework for understanding the larger socio-political forces at work on Black people in the U.S. It helps us to go beyond considerations of individual effort, responsibility and blame to a broader vision of the barriers that people often face through no fault of their own, just because they were born in a devalued racial, ethnic group or a devalued sex or sexual identity. This doesn’t mean that individual ambition and “hard work” aren’t important. Rather, it looks more holistically at issues related to racial and gender privilege and disadvantage that are built into most of the systems that we encounter.
I want you to explore either structural racism, Islamophobia. It’s your choice. These are the topics that have received the most attention in relation to structural issues. Islamophobia can impact African descent people because 20% of Muslims in the US are Black (Pew Research Center, 2017). Find an article (you only need one, but it should be substantial, not just a short column. It can be a journal, newspaper, magazine, newsletter or website that discusses your topic, and read it carefully. Compare it to the articles by Barbarin and Coates.
