Description
Write a “Think Piece” on The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein
Use the following questions as a guide to reading the book and while taking notes on the book. NOT for writing paper!
1) What did you learn?
2) Did The Color of Law influence you personally, if so how?
3) How did the book enhance your overall understanding of time period.
4) What did you like most or least about the book and why?
5) What lessons (if any) can be learned from this book? How you would share those lessons to others?
Reading and writing notes based on the aforementioned questions will, I hope, help you formulate a thesis, a claim you will establish as a focus for your paper. Your thesis can be what you want it to be. You can focus on a theme, on a section, or on something that specifically impacted your learning. It should NOT be a thesis that leads to summarizing the entire book. This is not a book report. If you write your paper based on answering these five questions you will earn a ZERO.
Now some of you might be thinking oh man, this is pretty board. Yes, you are 100% correct and that is the point. Meaning, unlike high school, where students are often told what to think, this assignment is based on YOUR/Student thinking. Students tend to be intimidated by this sort of assignment, but the key to remember is that this college and you are expected to live in the thinking for yourself world. This assignment should not be looked at like a chore, but rather an opportunity to enhance your own analysis and critical thinking.
All reaction Papers Must:
Contain a central claim (thesis) that will guide paper. THESIS MUST BE ITALICIZED.
Before you ask, I don’t require any specific “format.” Why? Because no matter what “Format” you use, you will still be assessed on your ability to illustrate critical thinking/analysis/and synthesis. Formats don’t help with that.
Cannot contain any quotes. I want to read YOUR thoughts, not the experts (myself or the authors).
Written used 1 inch margins, double spaced, 12 pt font, in Times New Roman.
No running header. NO NAME, JUST OPEN DOCUMENT AND START TYPING.
YOU ARE FORBIDDEN FROM WRITING IN THE FIRST PERSON (I, me, you, we). Ignoring this requirement will result in a loss of 2 points each time used.
Be no LESS than 4 full pages. Full pages, not 3 full pages and three quarters—this will not work. Failure to meet minimum requirement will result in automatic loss of 20 points. Do not hit “Enter” an extra time to stretch your paper out to make it “seem” like you met page requirements.
Must adhere to collegiate writing conventions–Indented paragraphs, grammar, capitalization, spelling, topic sentences, transition sentences, double spaced.
Failure to adhere to the aforementioned requirements will result in loss of 5-35 points.
The Turnitin function is on for this assignment.
