The Reign of Emperor Augustus Essay
Pick five (or more) ancient primary sources dating to or describing the reign of one emperor (not Nero). These may include texts, coins, statues, and buildings. Consider how these sources help us understand the ways in which he wields power. In particular, look at the features of autocratic rule that he embodies, the ways in which his reign responds to the changing nature of the Empire, and how he presents himself to different audiences. Due December 13th at 11:59pm.
Prepare a report of no more than 12 pages (and no fewer than 10) (11 point, double-spaced). Your report should contain the following elements:
a short introduction describing what each piece of evidence comprises;
a discussion of the ways in which each piece of evidence is useful for understanding how the emperor exercised power and how that power was presented by the emperor and received by those who saw it and reported it at the time and read about it or saw it later;
a discussion of how each piece of evidence adds to, undermines, contradicts, or adds a different spin on what can be understood from two pieces of relevant modern scholarship.
You should be mindful of the different media of the pieces of evidence (text, image, coin), their dates, their author/producer, their audience, and their purpose.
