The Silk Road Film Assignment Project
I’m working on a history discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Since the caves of prehistoric France and Spain we have sought to think critically about the cultures we observe through their objects, monuments and often literature in primary sources. Art History is about excavating people’s lives by interpretative means, and often we are quite unsure about original context, meaning our studies still remain in the realm of hypothetical reconstruction even when we have literature and written documentation. The aim is to keep our line of questioning open to possible revision as there is always the possibility to discover more.
Geography is always key concern when exploring cultures of the past. This last discussion will explore the presence and effects of the Silk Road over the time period in which we have studied the Ancient Near East (Persepolis) to the Early Byzantine period (Constantinople).
Please watch the following documentary narrated by Dr. Sam Willis who is a historian. Upon viewing this film, please reflect on how learning about the Silk Road informs our study of the history of art. I’d also like you to assume a more general perspective and consider, then comment on as many periods/cultures as we have studied over the last 10 or so weeks.
Why should we consider the Silk Road as a possible influence on art and architecture? What did it provide from India to Venice, that we have not yet had the opportunity to consider? Discuss at least one example from the film and compare to another example we have learned about in class. (Ex: Egyptian art or Roman’s or Greek’s art)
The film is available on Films on Demand entitled The Silk Road: Where East Meets West (Part III)
