Tokugawa and the Closed Country Policy
Module 9 Discussion: Tokugawa Japan’s Closed Country Policy
Below is a link to Tokugawa Iemitsu, “Closed Country Edict.” This edict was passed by the Japanese shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu (r. 1623-1641), who completed the anti-Christian policies of his father, Tokugawa Hidetada. Tokugawa Iemitsu expelled or executed remaining the Christian missionaries in Japan and forced the entire Japanese population to register as parishioners of Buddhist temples. He also expelled the Portuguese to prevent the spreading of seditious ideas. His isolationist policy remained in place for more than 200 years.
