The Zapiro cartoon “The Black and White Nation,” simultaneously implies:
1) South African socio-political and resistive sentiment during apartheid;
2) the hopefulness of the country’s “Rainbow Nationalism” transitional phase; and finally,
3) a sense of disappointment and the realization that a few years after 1994’s first democratic election, promises of equity had yet to be fulfilled.
For this assignment, you should choose ONE song by a South African artist that exemplifies each respective period described above (ending up with a total of THREE songs). Only one of your three songs can be an example that we’ve covered in class.
Use the class song “Pata Pate” by Miriam Makeba. Choose 2 other South African songs that support the 1-3 prompts. For a total of 3
With each song, you should provide brief biographical information of the artist/band. Importantly, you should explain how the song matches each period mentioned (refer to song lyrics, musical sounds, and signifiers). For context, you should reference at least two of the readings from class. I am also including some additional references as attachments to this document that might be helpful with your assignment (see their bibliographic entries below).
Your assignment should be formatted as a Word document, 3-5 pages in length, Times New Roman font, 12-pt, double spaced. References should be cited in Chicago Style.
Here are the reading links to include and the last 2 links are for class readings you must relate and use for the paper. ALL READINGS are relevant and she be talked about in the paper. Please follow all requirements and guidelines. Please site all readings and use readings appropriately to answer the bibliography essay questions.
