Tourism’s Impact on Muslim Culture
Tourism was not going well among the Toraja people of Sulawesi, Indonesia. In fact, in the late 1980s, a number of Toraja communities simply refused to accept tourists due to their dissatisfaction with the way sacred funeral ceremonies were being adapted to meet tourists’ needs. As a result, host communities’ culture and traditions are threatened by the tourism industry’s purchasing power. Tourists aren’t any better from a cultural standpoint. Tourists get staged authenticity instead of rich and authentic cultural insights and experiences; instead of exotic culture, they get kitsch. Discuss four cultural differences (Scollon and Scollon, 1995) that may have prompted the Toraja communities to resist the threats posed by tourism in the context of the narrative presented above. Your response must be at least 700 words long and no more than 1000 words long.
2. In many Muslim countries, Muslim women must adhere to strict standards when it comes to their appearance and behavior in public. Tourists in these countries frequently disobey or are unaware of these standards, dressing half-dressed (by local standards) in revealing shorts, skirts, or even bikinis, sunbathing topless on the beach, or openly consuming large amounts of alcohol. Aside from causing animosity, this type of behavior may encourage locals to disregard their own traditions and religion, resulting in tensions within the community. In Polynesia, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean, conservative Christian communities face similar cultural clashes. Question: Using the contact hypothesis, describe the possible outcomes of the above-mentioned tourist-host contact. Make sure to talk about the results in terms of tourist-host interactions, perceptions, values, and communication. Your response must be at least 700 words long and no more than 1000 words long.
