Write A Brief Treatment on Schizophrenia
Individuals Who Do Not Produce Reliable Results When Interviewed Because Of Emotional Deficiencies
Discuss the various symptoms of individuals who do not produce reliable results when interviewed because of mental or emotional deficiencies. Explain how long the interviewer should continue the questioning and what he or she should do to terminate the interview. What is the next step for this suspect?
Develop a brief profile of the mentally disturbed subject and what attributes enable the interrogator to classify the subject as possibly being a psychotic.
Write a brief treatment on schizophrenia as mental illness and as a fractured personality, and explain the four main categories of schizophrenic characteristics.
There is an extensive list of brain diseases in your text. Select one of them. Go on the Internet and research the expected behaviors resulting from the damage they can do to the brain. Describe the behaviors of this brain disease and explain how an interrogator could identify the disease during interaction with the subject.
Describe the actions the interrogator should take once he or she has been alerted by the subject’s kinesic behavior to a possible risk of suicide.

The Importance of Carbon READ: Overview, Section 4.1, and Figure 4.2
Who is Stanley Miller?
A scientist that conducted an experiment simulating an early Earth atmosphere.
What 4 major molecules were thought to comprise Earth’s early atmosphere?
Ammonia (NH2), Hydrogen gas (H2), Methane (CH4), Water vapor (H2O)
Describe how Stanley Miller used these inorganic molecules to produce organic molecules
using the figure below:

Water was boiled to simulate the boiling sea on early Earth( this water evaporated and becoming
water vapor. Water vapor, methane, hydrogen gas and ammonia are mixed in the top left
glass sphere connected to electrodes to simulate lightning on the early planet Earth. Cold water is
run around the glass tube containing the electrified gases leading from the electrode sphere to the
collection flask. The cold water causes the gases to condense to a liquid and this liquid is collected
and analyzed for the presence of organic molecules.
What organic molecules did Stanley Miller produce in his experiment?
Miller and Urey identified a variety of organic molecules:
-amino acids
-complex oily hydrocarbons
Carbon’s Diversity
READ: carefully read Section 4.2 to answer #1 & 2, Skim section to answer #3 & 4
1. Explain how carbon’s electron configuration accounts for its ability to form large, complex, and diverse organic molecules. Carbon has 4 unpaired electrons (valence electrons in its outermost electron shell. This electron configuration allows carbon to bond with up to 4 other atoms. The carbon atom can bond with many other carbon atoms, forming the backbone of all organic molecules.
2. Describe how carbon skeletons may vary, and explain how this variation contributes to the diversity and complexity of organic molecules. length of the carbon chain
branching of the carbon chain (structural isomers)
placement of a double bond between carbon atoms (geometric isomers)
4. arrangement of atoms that are bonded to a central carbon atom in a molecule (enantiomers)
3. Describe the basic structure of a hydrocarbon and explain why these molecules are hydrophobic. Hydrocarbon, let’s break this word down:
Hydro = hydrogen and carbon = carbon (of course()
Hydrocarbons are compounds composed of carbon and hydrogen. The bonds between a carbon atom and the hydrogen atoms are NONPOLAR, no charge separation develops between atoms of carbon and the hydrogen atoms bonded to them because they are sharing the valence electrons equally
A hydrophobic molecule is something that does not have an affinity for water, which remember is polar. Being as though hydrocarbons are nonpolar molecules they do not have an affinity for something polar like water, so they are hydrophobic (water haters!)
4. Distinguish among the three types of isomers: structural, geometric, and enantiomer. structural isomers- branching of the carbon chain
geometric isomers- placement of a double bond between carbon atoms
enantiomers- arrangement of atoms that are bonded to a central carbon atom in a molecule
Functional Groups READ: Section 4.3 (skim all subsections to answer question, carefully read Figure 4.10)
5. Name the major functional groups found in organic molecules. Describe the basic structure of each functional group and outline the chemical properties of the organic molecules in which they occur. 6 major functional groups: (check out the functional groups in the macromolecules discussed in chapter 5)
Hydroxyl- OH (found in the linear and ring structure of carbohydrate monomers and R groups of some amino acids)
Carbonyl =O (found in the linear form of carbohydrate monomers and R groups of some amino acids. Also found in some of the nitrogenous bases of nucleotides )
Amino NH2 (found in all amino acids and in some of the nitrogenous bases of nucleotides)
Carboxyl =O and OH bonded to same carbon atom (found in all amino acids)
Sulfhydryl SH (stabilizes tertiary protein structure)
Phosphate (Major component of nucleotides and phospholipids)
