One of the significant things I have seen and experienced Implicit Bias towards is Police officers or law enforcement. When I first joined the Air force, I enlisted as a Security Forces member. After coming back home from boot camp and working out at my base, I noticed that others treated us differently, and the stigma was that we were dumb because of only needing an ASVAB score of 55. Now 55 is the lowest you need to get in, and it was assumed that we all barely passed. In reality, most of everyone I knew scored high enough to have any job in the Air force. It didn’t affect me much until after I became a boom operator and saw how differently the same people that worked with me as a cop now work with me as an aircrew member. Before, they did the bare minimum of what they needed to help. Now, as a Boom Operator, they’re going above and beyond to ensure my needs are met.
I think the idea that all cops are bad has negatively affected our society in many ways. Yes, some have done wrong things, just as in any other career field. They should have to face the consequences for their actions, but that doesn’t mean everyone is bad. There is a prejudgment being made when people see Police officers, good or bad. That I believe could relate to the core principles of Integrity, Responsibility, Compassion, and Forgiveness. People need to lead by example and be honest in what they are doing. Then take responsibility for their actions if they have done something wrong. Compassion and forgiveness are two things others should show because you don’t know how you react to different situations. To try and see things from a different perspective.

The video and reading this week were fascinating, and it makes you think about if you have experienced any implicit bias or if you are the person who has done the tendency yourself. Implicit bias is where we prefer a person or a group of people instead of being neutral. htt ps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implicit_stereotype. My organization is very diverse. We are a bilingual school, and I don’t see anything that sticks out amongst our team dealing with implicit bias on gender or race. Now I will say it is a bit biased regarding the different departments and how they are handled.
I work in our Special Education Department, and since I’m an Interventionist, I’m considered support staff. Then we have our teachers in the class all day long with their students. So, with both groups, we have to have the same thing when it comes to having lesson plans and deadlines for those plans. The only significant difference is that support staff do more of the small group instruction vs. the whole class unless we are pulled to sub, which has been a lot lately. This past week on our half-day, the teachers had to cover their lunch because many teachers had to prepare for a school engagement for that night. So, the admin made the call that the teachers got to leave 2.5 hours early because they missed their 30-min. lunch. This was fine until they advised that my department and any support staff in the building had to stay the whole day. This caused an uproar with the staff because they constantly singled us out from the lead teachers. Our workload has gotten heavier because they want to lighten the teacher’s load.
None of us got a lunch that day, and we barely do on Thursdays since it’s a half-day with students, but to not acknowledge that we didn’t receive a lunch either and only support the teachers in leaving early for the day was a biased move on admins part. In the end, they corrected the situation, and we all got to leave, but not initially being conscious of what was going on and the feelings of the other staff members is what keeps my company divided. This closely relates to Justice as Fairness. I say this because everything should be equal for all employees in your organization. This will help remove all the negativity.
