Depression Self-Rating Scale Case Study Paper
Various successful metrics for clinical practice can be found in Joel Fischer and Kevin Corcoran’s book “Measures for Clinical Practice, Volume II: Adults.” All of the client assessment scales listed by the authors are regarded as measures of personal and social functioning as well as measures of living problems. The measure that I selected and used to complete my assignment was the Depression Self-Rating Scale, DSRS.
The DSRS is designed to measure the “extent and severity of depression in children” (Birleson, P 1981). The DSRS is an 18-item instrument designed specifically to measure depression in children between the ages of 7 and 13. Because of the age group the items on the scale are written in practically simple language and responses. The participant must answer the 18-item self-report questionnaire by selecting a number between 1 to 3 for each statement (1 = Most of the time, 2 = Sometimes, 3 =Never. As I read further in the book “Measures for Clinical Practice” I learned that Alphas in the two studies were .86 and .73, indicating fair and internal consistency. The test-retest reliability coefficients was .80, showing good stability.
The DSRS has good concurrent validity, correlating .81 with the children’s Depression Inventory. In both studies, the DSRS showed good-known groups validity, significantly discriminating between depressed and nondepressed children with very few false positive errors (classifying non depressed children as depressed).
I administered the Depression Self-Rating Scale instrument twice a week for three weeks to a close family friend. I started on February 10, 2022 and ended on February 25, 2022. The participant is a healthy 12-year-old Hispanic female. She recently experienced her best friend moving to another state and she was her only friend. The results are listed below.

To obtain the participant’s five scores I followed the author’s instruction for scoring. The DSRS items are scored on a 3-point scale, with positively worded items ranging from 0 to 2 and negatively worded items ranging from 2 to 0. The responses are totaled, so the range of possible scores are 0 to 36 Therefore, after carefully analyzing the five scores it was evident that the participant had higher scores starting on February 17,2022 which indicated she had significant depression due to her best friend moving.
It can be clearly seen that the participant’s scores remain stable before her friend moved to another state and after she did the scores increased. The dates with the most increase was February 20th and the 24th. She said it finally set in that she won’t be seeing her best friend and that going to school without her was devastating for her.
I feel that the book “Measures for Clinical Practice” provides practitioners, researchers, professors, and even students with dependable and valid instruments to use while working with clients or conducting research projects. The instruments in the book are applicable to all theoretical orientations. The book’s format is simple to understand. Not only did I read about the instrument I chose, but also about a few others.
