History Tradition & the Past
Description
What is the relationship between history and the past, and between tradition and the past? If history is the recording of the past, what does it do with the past? Does it record it like a video camera would? Does it alter it? Moreover, this can be further complicated with the category of tradition, which also has a unique relationship with the past. Does tradition alter the past? Does it record it? There is a common tendency to view history as a more “factual” rendering of the past and tradition as a more “fictional” rendering. This assignment is a challenge and opportunity to consider these complex ideas.
Provide a 800- 1000 word essay (Word Doc.) on the relationship of history writing (historiography) to the (actual) past and the relationship of tradition (enactments [often ritualistic, or ceremonial] of the past) to the (actual) past. In this case, history writing comprises the 1 Maccabees’ account of the Maccabean revolt and the recovery of the Temple from the Seleucid Greeks, and tradition comprises the ritual of Hanukkah (Chanukah).
Your mark will be out of 24.

Watch this PBS video on the relationship between history and the past. It will help set the tone for the assignment, challenging you to think of the past differently.
Watch this video on the Bar Kochba Revolt. Note, this is not the same revolt as the Maccabean Revolt, but it is very similarly appropriated. The video demonstrates how these “revolts” are not carried out by the entire Jewish population, but are remembered in such a way as though the entire Jewish population did participate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRsRcYnhnH4&feature=emb_title

Focus on the distinction between the tradition of Chanukah (Hanukkah) and the history as presented in 1 and 2 Maccabees. Is there a distinction? Note, the 2 Maccabees 7 story of the Mother and her seven sons should be read as well. However, the exercise related to that reading is optional. With the mother and her seven sons, consider whether it a tradition or history?

Is it biased? Is it factual? Does it represent all Jewish people, or a particular ideological group?
