Media Resources
In today’s world, the use of media to influence policy and politics in any setting is commonplace. The move from radio, film, and television to social media has had a tremendous impact on political campaigns and the public’s understanding of policies and objectives. The media portrays health promotion to customers in three ways:
Media advocacy, public education, and social marketing
What is the most successful way to use the media to promote health and advocate for policy and effective politics in healthcare? Nurses are masters at assessing whether or not media is being used appropriately to promote healthcare messages. Nurses look for neutral data that can be used to take political positions on policy concerns. The same rules that are used to determine the quality of patient education materials must be applied to media sources. Before taking a position on a policy problem based on specific information, one must ask the following questions:
What is the channel via which the message will be delivered? Is this a trustworthy website?
Who is the one who is sending the message? Why?
What is the message being conveyed, and what rhetoric is being employed? Is there a “spin doctor” at work here?
Is the presentation’s message effective? Is the message clear and accurate? 132-134) (Mason et al., 2016).
Opinion editorials (op eds), talk radio, and blogs are all techniques for communicating reactions to media-generated information. There are resources available on how to approach presenting one’s answer to a media outlet in order to influence a public agenda. Guidelines for Getting Your Message Across and Using Social Media are outlined in Box 12-3.
Policy and Politics in Health Communication
Effective communication, both verbal and nonverbal, is essential for advancing policy efforts. Persuasion is a potent tool that works best when combined with excellent communication abilities.
Nursing practitioners can use the following techniques to improve in-person communication effectiveness:
First impressions; attire; conversing; etiquette; face-to-face networking; business cards; and
A brief biographical sketch (Mason et al., 2016).
Nonverbal communication comprises body language and nonverbal clues such as eye contact and body position, and it occurs through our physical demeanor. Mason et al.(2016), p. 95, outlines the stages of discussion. These phases must be understood in order to effectively communicate and influence health policy and politics.
ADR stands for “alternative dispute resolution.”
Appropriate communication skills are critical in attempting to reach a peaceful resolution of the issues at hand during a conflict. Mason et al., on page 78, discuss strategies for effective communication preparation. As a nurse leader, daily preparation in the workplace can improve your capacity to communicate strategically. In Chapter 9, key principles are highlighted that can be utilized right now as you begin your journey to increasing your knowledge and abilities as a graduate nurse.
