Source: There should be only one source (the play) listed on the work cited. You will not need to research in the library (or elsewhere) to find sources for this paper. Any paper that does not contain a work cited will be deducted 10 points. The source citation on the work cited must be correct. This play will be cited on the work cited similarly to how you cited a short story found in the Norton textbook for your Essay 1.
Think before you write: I want you to think about your honest answer to this question: Is Mrs. Wright in Trifles guilty or not guilty of killing her husband, Mr. Wright. (Pay attention to this: Trifles does not come out and say Mrs. Wright is guilty of murder, but readers assume she is guilty of murdering her husband based on the facts/clues the two women in the Wright home uncover). Please do not just state the fact that she killed her husband. Also, do not just discuss how she killed her husband. Think above these basic ideas. You are to either defend or condemn her for killing her husband. In this context, condemn means “sentence someone to a particular punishment.” In order words, do you think the murder was justified?
Prompt: In a minimum of 500-words, write a multi-paragraph essay, I want you to find clues and information given in the play to either defend Mrs. Wright or condemn Mrs. Wright of killing her husband. This is your opinion; your argument. BUT–DO NOT USE I in this paper! (Keep reading to find out why). I want you to argue whether or not YOU find her guilty of the crime (again, you are to condemn or defend her). Do you understand why she killed her husband? Did he deserve to die, or are you under the opinion that murdering someone should never, ever happen?
(Side note: think about how many news stories you hear where a woman kills the man who kept her captive and did really bad things to her; honestly, I think the murder was justified–sorry if that offends any of you, though). Are there clues or is there enough evidence to condemn Mrs. Wright to life in prison or death? Is Mrs. Wright only guilty of defending herself from a cold, unloving husband? Respond to this prompt by using the assumption that Mrs. Wright killed her husband; would you condemn her to death or life in prison, or would you defend Mrs. Wright and fight to set her free? Use specific information from the play to support your ideas–correctly cited quoted passages from the play must appear in your essay.
Note Well: Please notice that I am using killed (past tense) instead of kills when referring to Mrs. Wright’s actions because this event happens before the audience (that’s us!) is introduced to the characters. You will need to use past tense as you discuss events that took place before you as a reader are introduced to the characters and the events that take place in the actual work you are reading, whether it be a work of fiction or a play. Use present tense as you discuss the events in the play that take place in the story you read—What the two men and the two women find in the house will be discussed in present tense since this action happens in front of the reader/audience directly.
Your essay should be comprised of at least 4 paragraphs: one introduction paragraph (in which you include the title of the play, the playwright, a short summary of the play, and the essay’s thesis–make sure to use the word defend or condemn in the thesis)
2 body paragraphs (in which you provide evidence to support why you condemn or defend Mrs. Wright’s actions)

The essay must contain quoted passages from the play. ** Your essay should include no more than two (correctly cited and short) quoted passages from the play.**
Note Well: Do not use first person (do not use I) in this paper. You are to give your opinion, yes, but instead of saying “I think she is innocent” say “She is innocent.” Not using I is better since you should not use first person in a formal essay. Also, it is clear that you think this because you wrote the paper. Do not use I in this paper.
Make sure you provide plenty of evidence from the play to support your points. Note: typically, when you cite lines from a play, MLA requires you to add the act, scene, and line numbers in the parenthetical citation. However, since this is a one-act play, all you need to add is the page number in the parenthetical citation.
