Questions about Psychosocial Crisis and Extrinsic Motivation
Week 3 Assignment – Conflicting Viewpoints Essay: Part 1
The prewriting paper (Part 1) is due this week, and the essay (Part 2) is due in Week 5.
Overview
When looking for information on a particular topic, how frequently do you try to fight biases toward your own point of view?
By playing the “Believing Game,” you will be able to practice this facet of critical thinking. The Believing Game is about attempting to “believe,” or at the very least evaluate, the grounds for competing viewpoints on a certain topic.
Instructions
You looked at the biases covered in Chapter 2 of the webtext and discussed one of the themes from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues in Week 2 Discussion. You may use the same or a different topic from this discussion:
Choose a topic from the Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues area, declare your viewpoint on the issue, and pick three premises (reasons) mentioned under either the Pro or Con sectionwhichever part opposes your position.
Answer these “believing” questions proposed by Elbow for the three premises (reasons) that challenge your position on the issue:
What’s fascinating or useful in this view?
What would I notice if I subscribed to this point of view?
In what sense or under what circumstances may this be true?
Read the excerpt about critical thinking processes: The Believing Game [PDF] and How to Make Divergent Opinions More Fruitful
Prewriting allows you to analyse your thoughts.
Guidelines for clear and orderly writing should be followed in the paper:
An introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph should be included.
In body paragraphs, use a topic sentence and supporting sentences to address the important topics.
Follow basic English language, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling norms.
There is no page requirement for this prewriting project.
There is no necessity to provide references in the assignment at this time.
Strayer Writing Standards are required for this course. Please see the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course for help and information. Any additional instructions should be sought from your lecturer.
