Rough Draft Fiction Analysis
Attach your rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area by the due date. Use the peer review questions supplied below to comment on at least two of your classmates’ contributions by the end of the week.
NOTE: There are two parts to this assignment. The rough draft can earn you up to 80 points, and peer reviews can earn you up to 20 points.
IMPORTANT: This week, your instructor will give five short stories to read and debate in class. The allocated stories are listed in the Week 4 Announcement. To receive credit for the assignment, you must choose one of these stories.
Write a 1,200-word analytical essay in which you provide an analysis of a literary element in one of the required short tales. In one of the allotted stories, write your analysis concentrating on one of the following elements:
CharactersTheme
Symbolism
ImagerysSetting
Begin by choosing one of your instructor’s suggested short stories. Identify the literary element you’d like to explore in the story via brainstorming. Character, subject, symbolism, imagery, or setting are all options. Then write a thesis that offers a unique perspective on this element. If you’re having problems coming up with a thesis, talk to your professor; he or she will be able to assist you. Do not conduct any additional research at this time. The final draft should be at least 1,200 words long (approximately four double-spaced pages). Use APA citations and formatting.
NOTE: If two literary elements support your point, your instructor may allow you to integrate them in your thesis statement. Your instructor may also allow you to compare and contrast elements from two of the assigned stories (for example, the grandmother characters in “A Worn Path” and “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”). Before attempting one of these methods, get permission.
Essay Guidelines
Begin with an appealing opener, such as a question, a quote from the novel, or an intriguing concept. Then, make a link to the short tale, mentioning the title and author. Finish your introduction with a thesis statement that explains one of the story’s literary elements.
Your thesis should be supported by the body paragraphs. Present relevant details from the short narrative that support your arguments. Make a point of quoting from the story and analyzing certain lines that support your point of view. As supporting evidence, body paragraphs usually include at least two short quotations.
Include a powerful ending paragraph that summarizes your main ideas and clarifies the thesis’ significance. Bring this paragraph to a close with a powerful and gratifying conclusion.
APA Reminder
For the essay’s formatting and source citations, use the APA style. Start with a title page and make sure the font and spacing are correct. A separate references page should be included at the end.
