SOCY 105 Social Problems and Issues Assignment
Academic Research Assignment
For this assignment you are expected to delve into an issue in contemporary society that
most interests you. You will find academic research to explore a specific issue dealing with what
you consider to be one of the most pressing social issues today. The assignment topic guideline is
purposely broad in order to get you thinking about a wide variety of issues that most interest
you.
Part of Sociological research includes being able to find and review scholarly accounts of
particular issues. In this assignment, you will be expected to find two peer-reviewed journal
articles on a specific, focused aspect of a Social Problem you want to learn more about. Once
you find the articles and have read them thoroughly, paying particular attention to the findings at
the ends of the articles, you will write a write a specific, guided, and more in-depth variation of
an annotated bibliography. In 7-8 pages you will summarize the approach, research methods,
and findings of each of your articles, and write about the connections across the academic
findings related to the Social Issue.Finding peer-reviewed journal articles
It is more difficult than one might imagine to find academic, peer-reviewed journal articles. For
this assignment, each article you find should be an original study in which the authors discuss a
research project they conducted. This can include working with data from a data set, interviews,
surveys, or experiments. (Articles that are policy and/or theoretical analyses and meta-analyses
– studies of many studies done on a topic – are not appropriate for this assignment.)SOCY 105 Social Problems and Issues
Paper Requirements
This is a very specific assignment in which you are expected to write about the findings in the
academic articles that you read, and discuss some of the similarities and differences of those
findings. Your paper should include the following sections:
1. Introduction
Begin the paper with an introductory paragraph that clearly states your paper topic (social
problem), briefly explains the main elements of the two academic articles, and highlights
what you learned about the topic from the academic literature you read for this
assignment.
2. Article 1 Summary
In this section you will be summarizing the major components of one of your peer reviewed,
academic articles. This should include all of the following sections:
a. A paragraph that give a general overview of the article. This could include any
research questions the authors have set out to answer, any definitions of terms
(from the article) that are vital to their research, and any other information that
would be important for the reader to get a general idea of the study.
b. One to two paragraphs in which you discuss how the authors collected their data;
write a summary of the research methods. This might include performing
statistical analyses on some data set, doing interviews, surveys, conducting an
experiment, etc. (Policy analyses, theoretical articles, and meta-analyses – studies
of many studies – will NOT work well for this assignment. If there is no section
in the article that describes how the authors conducted their study, it is likely not a
good choice for this paper.)
When writing about the research methods, you want to give the reader a general
idea of how the research was performed. You do not have to include all of the
very nit-picky details here. Only include what is necessary/important to help
understand the findings. Please be sure to write about the researchers’ research
methods in your own words. That will help to make sure that you only write
about the elements of the research methods that you understand.

c. Write about (at least) three specific, noteworthy findings from the article. These
findings will be listed toward the end of the academic articles. When reading and
trying to understand the articles, you should pay most attention to the middle/end
of the articles in which the authors discuss the research methods, findings, and
conclusions. (You have permission to skip or skim through the beginning
sections of the articles that include a literature review section. This should not be
included as part of your article summary.)
For a description of the “formula” of academic articles, and to help you navigate
the process of trying to understand these challenging articles, please take a look at
the “Anatomy of an Academic Article” handout that can be found in the
“Syllabus, Assignment, and Study Guides” link from our Blackboard page.
3. Article 2 Summary
Use the information above (#2) to write about the second article. This includes the
following sections (with more detail provided above):
a. Overview of the article,
b. Summary of the research methods,
c. Three (or more) major findings.
4. Connecting the Findings
Make some connections across the findings/results in the articles by answering the
following questions:
a. What were some of the similarities across the articles? How were the
findings/results of the studies consistent with one another?
b. Were there any major differences in the conclusions drawn from your two
academic articles? If so, what were they and what might explain those
differences?
5. Conclusion
In the final 1-2 paragraphs, write about some conclusions you are able to draw about your
topic that are based in the findings from the academic articles. Were the findings what
you expected? Different? If there is a discrepancy, explain why there might be a
difference.SOCY 105 Social Problems and Issues Assignment
