Dramaturgy Project
Observations
Many of you may have wondered what a Dramaturg is as you read Chapter 3 of this book.
The book provides a brief overview of what this person does for a theatrical production, but I disagree with the definition and would like you to gain a better understanding of this position.
To help you do that, I’ve created a small assignment that will put you in the shoes of a real dramaturg.
I’d like you to use the following definition of a dramaturg:
A dramaturg is someone who acts as a liaison between the playwright and the production.
This means that it is the dramaturg’s responsibility to ensure that the director, actors, designers, and everyone else involved in the production are adhering to the playwright’s original vision.
What role does a dramaturg play in this?
A dramaturg can accomplish this in a variety of ways, but one of the most popular is the PERSIA method.
THE PERSIA METHOD Under this system, the dramaturg examines the time period in which the playwright lived from six different perspectives.
P Political, as in what was going on in the world at the time the playwright was writing it.
Was there a war going on, who was the King or President, and so on.
E Economic, referring to the state of the economy at the time the play was written.
Was the playwright a poor writer, was the economy good or bad, and so on.
R Religious, referring to what was going on in the world of religion at the time the play was written.
At the time, what was the predominant religion?
S What was going on in the world at the time the play was written in terms of social issues.
Were there any class systems in place, and if so, what were they like?
I Intellectual, what was going on in the world of education intellectually, and what were the popular philosophies at the time.
A What famous art movements were taking place during the playwright’s lifetime?
Assignment:
Students must experience what it’s like to be a Dramaturg for a production and write a 350-word essay in which they choose one of the six viewpoints and show how it influenced the Playwright.
Read William Shakespeare’s play Othello.
The play is available for free online in a variety of locations.
You can find the text of William Shakespeare’s Othello by Googling it.
After that, you must choose a point of view from which to conduct research on the time and place when this play was written.
Between the years 1575 and 1630 a.d. in London, England, is the time period in question.
Choose one of the PERSIA points of view and research it.
Now write a 350-word essay about the information you’ve gathered and how it influenced Shakespeare’s work.
I’d like you to complete the essay in the Course Content Section under the Dramaturgy Assignment to turn in this assignment.
You have the option of writing your answer in the answer box or attaching a word document if you prefer.
Play Macbeth, to give an example. Political point of view
During Shakespeare’s lifetime in England, James V of Scotland had just become James I King of England.
Because Macbeth is about a Scottish king, it’s safe to assume Shakespeare was writing a play for the current King of England in mind.
James I was also fascinated by the occult, and the witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth play play an important role in moving the plot forward.
Consider the following:
Make sure your research takes place between 1575 and 1630 in London, England.
I know the play is set in Venice and then Cypress, but you haven’t done any research on either city.
You’re doing research on Shakespeare, and you’ve discovered that he lived in London, England, and wrote plays for Londoners.
It is unknown whether Shakespeare ever left London to visit Italy, so discussing Italy is not the focus of this paper.
Do not discuss the Cinthio short story on which Othello is based.
This paper is not about this Italian writer writing in Italy, once again.
There were many different versions of Othello during Shakespeare’s time.
Shakespeare’s version was the best, which made it notable.
Cinthio’s short story is of no consequence.
Do not broach the subject of the Venetian-Ottoman Wars.
This war took place in another country, and while it is mentioned in the play, it has no bearing on Shakespeare or the London audience.
Do not write a play’s synopsis.
The majority of your paper should be devoted to your research, with only a few references to the play made when your findings are related to a specific character or event in the play.
