Why does my child spend the entire day playing?
“As an early childhood educator, you will face numerous hurdles in explaining the importance of play to families, other educators, and program administrators. Because play is so important for development, it is important that you know how to explain its value even before you are asked to do so…Because play is so important for development, it is important that you know how to explain its value even before you are asked to do so…Because play is so important for development, it is important that you know how to explain its value even before you are asked to do so…Because play is so important for development, it is important that you know how to explain its value (Feeney et al., 2013, p.305)
POST: In this post, you will play the part of a teacher who is having a conversation with a parent. The parent requested the meeting because she believes her child is not learning enough in your play-based classroom. “When are you going to start teaching her something?” she asks, concerned that her 4-year-old child will not be ready for kindergarten next year.”
You will respond to this parent with a thoughtful statement that reflects what you studied in Chapter 9 on the purpose and significance of play in the development of young children. Consider this an opportunity to practice explaining how play benefits a child’s growth across all domains, including physical, social, emotional, and, most crucially, cognitive development. This is the central theme of your play essay.
This assignment is aligned with course learning outcomes 2 and 3 as well as student learning objectives 5, 6, 7, and 8.

Playing Examples of Children
This topic was prepared in order to help you with your Play Essay. In the past, students have struggled with one aspect of this project, the “examples” section. Review the Play Essay Guidelines and Rubric to understand how you must provide “real-life” examples of children engaging in play and exploration that clearly explain how the play supports each developmental domain when writing your essay. As a result, you must come up with four alternative situations or examples of play that connect to the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains in your essay.
POST: Make up a scenario for a child or group of children aged 0-5. Make your scenario as detailed as possible without revealing the domain you’re attempting to represent.
