Adrienne Rich’s “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” (1951)
Aunt Jennifer’s tigers, bright topaz denizens of a green world, prance across a screen.
They are unafraid of the men beneath the tree, and they pace with a sleek chivalric confidence.
Aunt Jennifer’s finger fluttering through her wool finds it difficult to pull even the ivory needle.
Uncle’s wedding band is a colossal piece of jewelry.
Aunt Jennifer’s hand is heavily pressed against him.
Aunt’s terrified hands will lie in the grave when she dies.
She was enslaved by ordeals that were still ringing in her ears.
The tigers she drew in the panel
Will continue to prancing, confident and unafraid.
